Belle Vernon Borough is nestled in the northwest corner of Fayette County, Pennsylvania. It is situated along the Monongahela River abutting two other counties, Westmoreland to the north and Washington across the river. Located 36 river miles south of Pittsburgh, Belle Vernon is situated at a point that connects 3 counties.
“Bellevernon”, as it was originally spelled, was laid out in 1813 by Noah Speer. French for “beautiful green”, this was the name chosen by Noah Speer for his little community on the Monongahela River. The sale of lots began in April of 1814. The town grew slowly and for a long time it merely a backwoods settlement. In 1836 things changed dramatically when the glass manufacturing industry came to Belle Vernon. On April 15, 1863 Belle Vernon Borough became incorporated.
Belle Vernon has a population of 1,093. In terms of land area Belle Vernon is rather small .31 square miles.
